Hair tangles result when individual hairs go in different directions and intertwine. As you can see, each V-knotted hair, by definition, goes in two different directions. With split knots, hairs become unruly and point in many different directions as the knots loosen with age.

The texture of hair varies from person to person, but hair strands are not smooth. Most human hair closely resembles tree bark under magnification. When individual hair strands intertwine, they can "lock" due to the rough surfaces involved.
